The enemy must be my friend
ICAF

The International Committee for Artists’ Freedom (ICAF) has taken up the cause of artists from many countries around the world facing hardship, censorship, exile, persecution, imprisonment, torture or even death. Each case is assessed individually, impartially and apolitically and all decisions are based purely on professional and humanitarian considerations.

Artists continue to face censorship, enforced exile, persecution and hardship and as long as this continues, so will the efforts of the ICAF to help them. ICAF works closely with the International Performers' Aid Trust (IPAT), which is a fully established charity, to which it refers many requests for ongoing financial aid for people working in the performing arts. ICAF also liaises with the International Federation of Actors (FIA), Amnesty International and other organisations and aim to respond quickly and effectively whenever the need arises.

Mission Statement

  • ICAF campaigns impartially and apolitically on behalf those working in the professional performing arts overseas, who have skills covered by Equity and are suffering oppression and persecution. It may also provide aid in times of hardship.
  • ICAF will use all appropriate campaign and communication methods to further these aims, but will not seek to comment upon broader issues of foreign policy. Nor will it campaign upon general issues and policies of particular Governments, regimes or political movements.
  • ICAF will work closely with other national and international pressure groups in carrying out its campaign activities, including the International Performers’ Aid Trust (IPAT).
  • The ICAF may occasionally campaign and support professional performers with skills covered by Equity, who are resident in the UK and have suffered oppression, persecution and hardship working in the performing arts overseas.
