Freemuse is the only international organisation fully dedicated to advocating freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide.
Freemuse was born of the 1st World Conference on Music and Censorship held in Copenhagen in November 1998. The conference joined together professionals from diverse fields and countries — musicians, journalists, researchers, record industry professionals and human rights activists — to examine, discuss and document a wide variety of abuses from the apparently benign to the overtly extreme.
The aims of Freemuse are to:
Since the Freemuse secretariat was opened in 2000 the organisation has systematically documented music censorship in more than 100 countries.
Freemuse has published several in-depth country reports and organised regional as well as world conferences.
All documentation is available at www.freemuse.org the world’s largest website on music & censorship.
Freemuse has initiated Music Freedom Day, March 3, in collaboration with international broadcasters and is since 2008 presenting an annual Freemuse Award.
